We incorporated Indus Vegpro Private Limited (IVPL) on December 2, 2013, to export processed vegetables from India.

IVPL currently has two factories, one at Davangere and another at Bandarlahalli on the Bangalore Hyderabad national highway, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

For the global food processing industry, IVPL grows, procures, processes, and exports semi-finished gherkins and other vegetables in natural vinegar, acetic acid, and brine.

IVPL’s processed vegetable range includes chillies (or hot peppers), jalapenos, cauliflower, celery sticks, hot peppers, onions, red and yellow bell peppers, garlic, and carrots and assorted vegetable mixes.

IVPL product packing is suitable for container fumigation and wooden packaging material fumigation.

IVPL started its business by opening a factory at Davangere in 2013 to process gherkins and other vegetables.

In 2018, IVPL added a second unit at Bandarlahalli on a three-acre industrial plot to process four thousand metric tonnes of gherkins and other vegetables annually.

In ten years since its inception, IVPL has become one of India’s leading processed vegetable exporters known for its high-quality, product traceability, and reliability.

IVPL is now a leading Indian processed vegetable exporter meeting the exacting demands of discerning global brands from all parts of the world.

Indus Vegpro bridging

Karnataka Farmers & Global Brands

IVPL connects Karnataka’s small farmers, well-known global retailers, and consumers in the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Japan, Korea, Australia and Russia. IVPL ensures that its gherkin supply chain ensures world-class quality and compliance with importing countries’ food safety norms.

Year-round raw materials

As gherkins are a tropical crop, farmers in Karnataka grow them throughout the year, assuring a year-round raw material supply. The Indian Gherkin export data from the Indian Gherkin Exporters Association establishes the trend of increasing exports over the past three decades, starting in the nineties of the twentieth century.

IVPL is one of the Indian gherkin exporters that meets the challenge of quality products through a sustainable farming model which creates raw materials in compliance with international product specifications.

Though producing quality vegetables is challenging for the Indian gherkin industry, IVPL has overcome such challenges through its sustainable farming model and meticulous post-harvest processing. Thus, IVPL has successfully increased its processed vegetable quantity and the number of containers it exports yearly.

IVPL believes that since India contributes only 8% of the total global gherkin demand, there is a tremendous opportunity for the industry to grow to increase the percentage of Indian gherkin exports in the global market.

IVPL supplies its products to leading international brands like Unilever Best Foods of France, Vlassic Foods and Mt. Olive of the USA, Sanyo Foods of Japan, and Reitzel of Switzerland.

Sourcing agents of international brands order their processed vegetable requirements through Indian vendors like IVPL, who have assured raw material supply sources and efficiently handle the processing and logistics for on-time delivery of high-quality products to the factories of leading global consumer brands.

Sustainability & livelihoods through

gherkin cultivation

Approximately 50,000 small and marginal farmers with one or lesser acre land holdings in Karnataka have stopped growing traditional crops by switching to gherkin cultivation.

Such farmers are now protected from market vagaries by gherkin contract farming for exporters. Moreover, unlike traditional crops, gherkins assure farmers of a guaranteed purchase by the gherkin exporters like IVPL.

Thus, the Indian gherkin industry has transformed the sustainability of small Indian farms through assured returns on a crop with well-defined processes specified by IVPL.

Gherkin farming is people-intensive, requiring at least eight people to work on the crop per acre. Additional people are required during harvesting, which begins thirty-five to forty days after seed sowing. Apart from direct employment at the farm, gherkin cultivation also provides ancillary employment and business opportunities to transporters and financiers.

Indus Vegpro's

ten-point sustainability programme

IVPL’s sustainability programme encompasses raw material sourcing to processing and shipment.

The company has analysed the environmental impact of all its activities and ensured that it achieves business results through optimised energy use and minimal environmental impact.

We list below our sustainable agricultural practices, social compliance, steps for biodiversity improvement and contribution to village local economies.

1.png

Better Seed For Higher Yield

We supply our farmers with improved crop seeds that have pest and disease toleranceto yield higher crop quantities.

2.png

Ensuring Soil Health

We conduct soil health checks and make our farmers fine-tune organic manure application in keeping with the soil’s nutrient status. We work closely with our farmers to increase the carbon (C) levels in their field soil.

3.png

Enhancing Soil Organic Matter

Our farmers generate compost with faster decomposing microbial consortiums we supply. Our farmers also grow green manure crops. Farmer addition of homemade compost and field green manure to soil maintains and enhances soil organic matter in our crop fields.

4.png

More Crop Per Drop

Our farmers rely on improved water management by using drip irrigation and soil mulching for the same crop yield by using lesser water and nutrients to generate “more crop per drop."

5.png

Ensuring Safety

We practice “Safe Food, Safe Farmer, Safe Environment” by ensuring that our farmers mostly use safer green-label pesticides. We train farmers on safe pesticide application using personal protective equipment (PPE) and regularly maintained spray pumps. We ensure collection and safe disposal of empty pesticide containers by incineration.

6.png

Biodiversity Enhancement

We conduct tree planting programmes to increase the green cover at our sourcing areas.  We also encourage farmers to grow kitchen gardens to maintain insect diversity around their farms.

7.png

E-training On Vegetable Cultivation

We have ensured easy learning of this content by our farmers through digital training guides of best cultivation practices we have listed here.

8.png

Women Empowerment

We empower women working at our factories by regularly conducting awareness programmes on hygiene and nutrition.  In addition, many of our vegetable sourcing farms are managed exclusively by women.

9.png

Reducing Carbon Footprint

We keep our carbon footprint low through efficient electricity use at our factories and by optimising the transport of sourced vegetables from farmers’ fields to our factories.

10.png

Developing Local Village Economy

We recruit employees from villages and avail different services from local businesses to help develop village economies in our raw material sourcing areas.
